Our thinking defines who we become in our life!

“Whatever you do, in order to change your circumstances, you have to get an education” – Olympia LePoint’s mother

Olympia LePoint is a recently well-known scientist, mathematician and public speaker who is a source of much inspiration to young women and men, having been raised in difficult times and situations. She has overcome unbelievable barriers, socio-economically and otherwise, to ensure she gets a great education and rises above a system that kept her down! Watch the video below to see how her mind-set, her thoughts and her actions changed everything.

It’s Not Easy to be Brave

What we learn from Olympia’s story is that sometimes the only thing that is stopping you is your own fear. If we put aside the fear, we can think clearly and create a strategy. But overcoming our fears means we have to be brave and we often fear our own bravery – it’s a vicious cycle! It’s not easy to be brave. The very definition of brave, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty. This is why we admire people who show bravery and find creative solutions to overcome adversity and difficulty. We know they faced many barriers and dangers but through their brave minds, they overcame and succeeded!

Don’t let Fear Control Your Mind

So, why does Olympia LePoint encourage us to not allow our fears to control our mind? Because our thinking is what defines our life. Not allowing fear to overcome us when we think about problems and create strategies to overcome them is what is important. She realised at a young age that once she removed her fear and decided to undertake a great education even at the risk of failing, she unleashed an inner power. The risk of failing should not be a factor. Putting your all into what you are attempting to achieve, and standing up no matter how many times you fall down, is what makes the difference between those who succeed and those who don’t.

Never Give Up

Failing isn’t the problem. Giving up is. Putting in more time and energy and persistence at problem solving and sticking to a well thought out plan, like achieving a great school education, is what will allow you to succeed. We have the choice to be scared of something, or go for it, no matter what happens. We unleash our inner power when we realise that we have a choice about how we think about problems, barriers and adversity.

“The things you think about determine the quality of your mind. Your soul takes on the colour of your thoughts” Marcus Aurelius.

Reality Check and Think Again

Realistic expectations and re-planning and re-thinking are important. Not to dissuade us, but to allow us the time and patience to return or retry something that may not have worked the first time. The outcome is important, but so is the process of thinking. The best thing to remind ourselves when we fail at overcoming a problem is that we actually learned something that can be used in a better plan going forward.

Discipline Your Disappointment

Having the goal in mind is important, but the road to getting there may not be easy nor straight. Always keeping the end goal in sight is a must, but knowing that there will be times when you will have to pause and readjust certain measures are a must. As the famous motivational speaker, Tony Robbins sums it up: “you have to discipline your disappointment”. Fear of failure should not be paralysing, if we can help it. We value what we put our energy into, so know that the work will pay off if you persist, think through the steps, invest in help and support and continue. Now that’s what that famous line “believing in yourself” is all about!

"Tania is always available, very honest and competent. She is always happy to listen and tailor the service to clients needs. The two tutors that we had for most of the time (Henry and Joseph) were amazing and the kids flourished under their support.
