A classic exam scenario goes something like this: The days before your exams, you panic and dread the days that lead up to the results. Your pre-exam days are filled with last-minute cramming and your nights with caffeine as you attempt to learn as much as possible in as little time as you can. Whilst we know this feeling and have all been there, it really could be different for you if you remember our top GCSE and A-level tips and start preparing well in advance.
Never sacrifice sleep for cramming
If you’re sacrificing sleep for last-minute cramming, you might as well not bother. Research from UCLA University shows that this is a recipe for disaster. Across the board students who slept less to study had lower results in the end. It is, therefore, the combination of enough study AND sleep that really leads to success. In fact, losing out on sleep only fills the next day with academic problems rather than reducing them. Additionally, choosing to cram over enough sleep prevents memories from sticking long-term beyond your exams, which also isn’t great news.
The alternative?
One of our top GCSE and A-level tips is to keep a consistent exam study schedule from January until May. Start early in the academic year and identify the topics and questions that are likely to come up. Then start preparing answers for them and set them aside for revision time before the exam.
Additionally, you should set aside as little as 20-30 minutes a week early on, and switch off all distractions. This way you can concentrate on the task at hand. This approach is like a savings account – the knowledge and answers you prepare over time will be something you can count on when revision time strikes. At the same time you get enough time to relax and sleep, knowing that you are set to do well by revising what you prepared well in advance.
