The figures are staggering. In the last three years, almost 50,000 university students were caught cheating at UK institutions with non-EU students four times more likely to cheat in exams and essays according to freedom of information data obtained by the Times. 11 institutions caught at least 1,000 students cheating over this three-year period with five students at Kent University even arranging for someone else to sit their exams.
The staggering figures
According to this Guardian article, the five universities to catch the highest number of cheating students are Kent (1,947), Westminster (1,933), East London (1,828), Sheffield Hallam (1,740) and Oxford Brookes (1,711).
Although they only account for 12% of the UK’s student population, non-EU students made up 35% of students caught cheating. At London’s Queen Mary University, for example, 75% of postgraduates charged with plagiarism were non-EU students with one third hailing from China.
As one professor from the University of Buckingham told the Times, one factor that fuels plagiarism is the increasing use of essay-writing services, which charge students hundreds of pounds. One such service, Ivory Research in London’s Canary Wharf area, proudly boasts to use “only the best writers in the industry” who can produce work for you that “will be of the highest academic standard.” The problem, however, is that you can still get caught cheating and you don’t increase your skill set, which could cause problems in the future.
